There’s no denying that winter has arrived and probably plans to stick around for at least another two to three months. Fortunately, there are a lot of places in the world where you can get away from the daily grind and relax a bit.

Whether you prefer a balmy-weather getaway in Mexico or a fun-filled ski vacation in the Midwest, there are plenty of options for you to have the best family vacation ever.

Warm-Weather Escape

Although snow is beautiful to look at when it’s falling, shoveling can get old pretty quick. And when that happens, it’s the best time to escape to a warmer climate. Hawaii, Southern California and Mexico are excellent warm-weather destinations when a family is looking for a vacation filled with sunny skies.

If you live on the East Coast, it could take an entire day to reach Oahu, while those who live in the Pacific Northwest may find traveling to the Caribbean too long of a trip. So where can you go that will give the best of both worlds?

Mexican Getaway

Puerto Vallarta is among one of the best spots for a family vacation in the winter. Most resorts offer activities such as bingo, beach volleyball, dancing and arts and crafts. Your children can escape to one of the kids’ clubs while you indulge in a spa treatment. In addition, to on-site dining options, most resorts offer babysitting services so that parents can enjoy some time alone.

Winter Wonderland

For families who can’t get enough of the white stuff, a trip to a snowy mountain resort makes for the ultimate family vacation. On the East Coast, you can set off to one of the numerous ski resorts in New York, Vermont, New Hampshire or Maine. For West Coast dwellers, you can hit the slopes in Utah, California or Colorado. There are also a lot of great ski resorts throughout the MidWest.

Most ski resorts offer stay and play packages that can accommodate any budget. And even if you’ve never tackled the slopes before, winter is the best time to learn. If you’re going to ski, be sure to get fitted for your skis before sloshing downhill. If snowboarding is more your forte, it’s also important to use a snowboard size chart to make sure you using the appropriately sized snowboard before you hit the slopes.

Become a City Slicker

Hitting a metropolis like Chicago, New York or Washington, D.C. during the winter means you will never be at a loss for things to see and do. If you happen to go on vacation during the holiday season, you’ll be able to see wonderful light displays in each locale.

In addition, plenty of restaurants remain open during the holiday period to ensure you and your family are well fed! Take the time to stroll through museums, visit historical sites and take in a show in the theater district. Depending on the age of your children, you can find kid-specific activities to entertain and delight like zoos, discovery museums and aquariums.

The Whole Package

Regardless of where you decide to go, make sure you plan ahead and pack accordingly! Make a checklist and mark off each pre-vacation item you complete. Most importantly, enjoy the time you spend with your family on your winter getaway and don’t forget to take pictures!
